About  Skene Family
This tree has been compiled from information retrieved from William Forbes Skene's book Memorials of the Family, Skene of Skene, Scotlands people (Wills and testaments),many hours of ploughing through Parish Registers, the IGI and FreeCen. It has been done so that I could maybe find where my proved family of Arthur Skene fits into the larger picture.

Most of the early information on this site has not been proved (and probably never will be) so dates must be taken as approximate. There are many inconsistancies with the early dates.

PLEASE NOTE: The spelling of the name Skene/Skeen/Skein is interchangeable. Spelling of names is only a fairly recent invention. Phonetic spelling relied on the hearing of the person writing the name and how he thought it should appear.

If anyone chances across this site and can offer some corrections or information please contact me. This tree is for the advantage of all Skene descendants. All I ask is that recognition be given to my research and that the website be included in any online useage.

HISTORY: Clan Skene is an early Sept of the Clan Robertson. It is said that a younger son (Donald) of Robertson of Straun saved the life of the King (Malcolm 11, Malcolm Canmore), by killing a wolf with his sgian or small dagger. For his bravery he was awarded the lands in Aberdeenshire, Parish of Skene. The lands were later forfeited but in 1118 Clan Skene joined the army of Alexander 1 of Scotland and the lands were returned to the family.

The first recorded persons bearing the name Skene were Johan deSkene del Conte de Edneburh and Patricl deSkene del Conte deAberdeen. It is possible that the Family of Skene is as old as the reign of William the Lion (William, 2nd son of the Earl of Huntingdon d1152, a son of David 1st of Scotland). William became King on the death of his brother Malcolm (9th Dec. 1165) and was crowned at Scone on the 24/12/1165. There appears to be 2 Skenes then - Johan holding the lands of Skene and Patrick the lands of Easter Skene. Thirteen Lairds succeeded each other until King Robert the Bruce.

The History of the family is really based on Services and Retours (return on value of lands) and commences in the reign of King Robert the Bruce. In 1317 Robert deSkene received a charter from Robert the Bruce.

I would recommend that all Skene decendants read W.F. Skene's book especially the preface where he states that he had 5 manuscripts, written at different dates to work from. He goes on to talk about the family's social position - the eldest inheriting, the next going into the Church etc. and how generations changed social standing by younger sons becoming educated. "We can thus see the sons of one obscure Notary Public on Deeside furnishing a Professor of Medicine, who became Physician to the King, and a learned Advocate, who was sent as Ambassador to Foreign Courts and occupying the high position of Lord Clerk Register."
